In Indonesia

Even though we have only been in Indonesia for 2 weeks and did not experience the whole variety of food and local specialities we would like to give you a quick overview of what we have been eating and drinking there.

À table!

As said, we only visited two tiny islands out of the hundreds in Indonesia and thus we know there are tons of more very regional dishes, so please do not be mad at us if we do not mention any speciality that you have already eaten in Indonesia.

Nasi Goreng & Mie Goreng

This is probably the national dish of Indonesia: fried rice (nasi goreng) and fried noodles (mie goreng). Sounds quite uninspiring, but tastes very good. It is a spicy fried rice/egg noodles topped with a fried egg and on the side you would find some fresh veggies and a spicy red sauce together with prawn crackers. An all-time favourite lunch snack :).

Satay

Satay

Well-known as well in Europe these curry marinated meat skewers that are barbecued on a charcoal grill are as well a signature dish from Indonesia. The classic satay is with chicken, but you will also find pork skewers around. The meat is marinated in a curry-oil-mix and then grilled in the streets or at the restaurant. They are usually served with a homemade peanut sauce, rice and some prawn crackers. Something you will find on the menu of pretty much every warung and we both loved it.

Beef rendang

Oh what a yummie dish! Big chunks of beef slowly simmered in a thick coconut cream sauce. The meat is super soft, the coconut sauce spicy and delicious and as usual it will be served with rice and prawn crackers. One of Moni's favourites.

Fresh seafood

Fish cooked in banana leaves

As Indonesia consists of hundreds of islands, it is no wonder that you find fresh seafood on every menu, especially on the coast. Freshly caught fish, squid and prawns are usually displayed on ice at the entrance of the restaurant, you pick your fish etc., they will marinate it with a spicy barbecue sauce and put it on the charcoal grill for you. Once ready it will be served with rice (or sometimes French fries) and some vegetables. Alex loved the fresh prawn skewers from the grill!

And drinks of course...

Bintang pilsener

Being an official muslim country, Indonesia is facing intense internal discussion over restriction on alcohol consumption. Obviously, the country being very diverse, alcohol consumption varies widly from one region to another. Touristic regions have alcohol widely available but most non muslim locals would rather drink beer in their local warung. There are two main local brands of beer in Indonesia: the famous Bintang, a light pilsener, delightful after a day under Indonesian sun :) or Anker which is equally as light.

One more note about Indonesian eating habit; Indonesian love their sweets and particularly sweetened condensed milk. Indomilk, the main brand in the country is widely available and offered at every occasion, pancakes, coffee, ... it's super sweet so off course Alex loves it :)
